The ideas in this section are not professional training advice. They are simply observations, lessons, and practices that have worked for me and my dogs.
Whether we realize it or not, dogs are constantly observing patterns. A consistent routine creates predictability. Predictability creates confidence. Confidence reduces stress and uncertainty for both dogs and the people responsible for them. Consistency builds trust, and trust builds obedience.
Choose your commands carefully and write them down. Once you decide on a word or phrase, use it consistently. Humans naturally use multiple words to describe the same thing, but this can confuse a dog. Consistency reduces confusion and helps your dog understand what is expected.
Every breed was developed for a purpose. Understanding that purpose can help explain everything from energy levels and prey drive to barking, digging, herding, independence, stubbornness, and trainability.
Just like humans, dogs develop behavioral and psychological problems when important needs go unmet. Before trying to correct a behavior, ask yourself what need the dog may be trying to satisfy.
